Common Applications and Types

Plumbing and PEX Systems:
In plumbing, particularly with PEX tubing, a crimp union is a fitting that creates a sealed connection. The PEX tubing is placed over a fitting, and a copper crimp ring or a stainless steel pinch clamp is compressed around the joint using a specialized tool to ensure a watertight seal. A union specifically refers to a fitting type (often with a nut in the middle) that allows two pipes or tubes to be connected and disconnected for maintenance without needing to move the entire pipe run horizontally.
Electrical Wiring:
In electrical applications, crimped unions are typically compression splice connectors or terminals used to join two or more wires or a wire to a terminal. These connectors (often made of tin-plated copper or aluminum tubing) are placed over the stripped wire ends and compressed with a crimping tool. The result is a high-conductivity, mechanically sound alternative to soldering.

Stovepipe and Ductwork:
In HVAC or stove installation, a "crimped union" can refer to a simple connector or union with one or both ends physically crimped (compressed) to fit snugly into the non-crimped end of another section of pipe, forming a basic, non-structural joint.
